Long unavailable anywhere, the Zellner Brothers’ cinematic gem KUMIKO, THE TREASURE HUNTER returns for a 10th Anniversary Re-Release! A Tokyo office worker (Rinko Kikuchi) finds a battered VHS tape of a fictional film, dontcha know, and becomes convinced the movie’s lost satchel of money is real. Believing she solved the mystery of the buried fortune, she abandons everything and embarks on a quest to frozen Minnesota in search of the mythical treasure, discovering the line between reality and fantasy may be even harder to locate.

In English and Japanese with English subtitles.

CRITIC’S PICK! A delicate, haunting study of a woman who has in several senses lost her way.” Neil Genzlinger, New York Times

“In the title role, Kikuchi is impressive, easily handling Kumiko’s comic and more somber sides and never allowing us to settle into a single or simple interpretation of the character.” G. Allen Johnson, San Francisco Chronicle

“It’s an enchanting work, heartbreaking yet wryly amusing… a truly mystifying human puzzle.” Marjorie Baumgarten, Austin Chronicle

October 31, 1977. Johnny Carson rival Jack Delroy (David Dastmalchian) hosts a syndicated talk show, "Night Owls", that has long been a trusted companion to insomniacs around the country. A year after the tragic death of Jack’s wife, ratings have plummeted. Desperate to turn his fortunes around, Jack plans a Halloween special like no other, unaware he is about to unleash evil into the living rooms of America.

“Dastmalchian makes a dashing host, with the Cairnes giving him a dark side as well. This has the potential for turning into a cult classic.” Randy Myers, San Jose Mercury News

“A nasty and delicious, unapologetic pastiche with a flair for menace. I had a blast.” Alissa Wilkinson, New York Times

A celebratory origin story of the world-renowned Latino musical movement Bossa Nova, THEY SHOT THE PIANO PLAYER captures a fleeting time bursting with creative freedom at a turning point in Latin American history in the 60s and 70s, just before the continent was engulfed by totalitarian regimes.

In English, Portuguese, and Spanish with English subtitles.

“Jazz and animation make for strong bedfellows in They Shot the Piano Player, a film… that represents an intriguing hybrid in all sorts of ways.” Chris Willman, Variety

“Getting to hear these musicians remember Tenório Júnior in their own words against the backdrop of the film’s gorgeous art direction brings them more to life better than a standard live-action talking head interview ever could.” Claire Shaffer, New York Times

The Saturday Secret Matinees are back for an epic 16th season, with weekly serial episodes plus secret classic features, all on 16mm film! Save with a series pass!

In FLASH GORDON’S TRIP TO MARS (1938), galactic dictator Ming the Merciless has escaped certain death and fled to Mars! Aided by the evil Queen Azura, Ming is destroying Earth as a mere stepping stone in a new war of interplanetary death and conquest! Intrepid Flash Gordon, steadfast Dale Arden, and super-genius Professor Zarkov once again fly between worlds and against all odds in a desperate bid to stop Ming’s ruthless campaign of fascist doom! Rarely screened, this second of the three Flash Gordon serials is considered among the best cliffhangers ever made.

Each week’s show also includes a secret feature film. Bi-weekly themes provide clues, but it could be almost anything: mysteries, sci-fi, art house, or monsters; a forgotten gem or a beloved classic.

Flash Gordon’s Trip to Mars is “a nearly ideal sequel…it’s also a nearly ideal serial. …It balances good acting, atmosphere, action, and plotting in such fine style that it would still be a notable achievement if it were the sole entry in the Flash Gordon series.” – The Files of Jerry Blake

“The beauty of the film is that it manages to outshine its extremely primitive background and create a world of pure wonder.” – Moria Reviews

111min · 4K DCP
  • Saturday, Mar 30, 2024, 4:30pm
  • Sunday, Mar 31, 2024, 8:00pm

Presented by Kung Fu Clubhouse!

A masterclass in tension and release, King Hu's DRAGON INN may be one of the sole masterpieces in martial arts cinema from which all modern entries draw inspiration. After the movie's release, the Chinese Wuxia picture was never the same.

The children of an executed general have been exiled from China. The emperor's eunuch, Cao, plots to kill them before they leave the country after his army is ambushed by two warriors. Cao commands secret police who lie in wait at the dismal Dragon Gate Inn to kill the late general's remaining children. But as the men wait for the two siblings, a lone martial arts expert, Xiao (Shih Chun), comes to Dragon Gate Inn to visit the innkeeper. While Cao's secret police struggle to maintain their cover until the prisoners arrive, Xiao investigates on his own to unveil the reasons behind the strange new presence at the inn.

In Mandarin with English subtitles.

“Camera, actors, props, even wind are all set against each other in contrast and harmony, held together by editing that displays a profound understanding of when to let things draw out and when to speed up into a flurry of motion so wild that it becomes almost psychedelic.” Jake Cole, Slant

“The formal strategies wouldn’t be worth scrutinizing, however, if DRAGON INN weren’t one of the most entertaining films of all time. Even before the action takes off, Hu gets you rooting for the good guys and jeering the baddies, setting up the characters and their rivalries with an expert knack for building tension.” Ben Sachs, Cine-File

“Elementally perfect. Enough to make you want to work at a movie theater where it’s all they ever show.” Matt Lynch, Scarecrow Video

VHS Uber Alles Easter Special!

VHS UBER ALLES presents a very special movie for the Easter holiday! A freelance writer is contracted to go undercover to write a lighthearted magazine story about the experiences of women working as bunnies in gentlemen's clubs. What begins as an easy breezy entertainment article transforms into real social commentary when she realizes that these bunnies aren't brainless bimbos, but women working just another job, deserving the same respect and autonomy she demands as a journalist. Her story gets deeper as the line between her undercover and real-life experiences becomes more and more indistinguishable. All the while, she starts to receive pushback from the men in her life against her burgeoning feminist awakening.

“[The journalist in this movie] is just a symptom of what’s wrong in America now. She chastises men, berates motherhood, defends abortion, is nothing but a pain in the butt.” “Pointless” 1 out of 10 IMDb review from some dude who is clearly a bit of a ladies’ man

“The movie is marred by some feminist whining crap about the plight of women…While not quite a full on T&A flick, it’s a fun movie with lots of talent in bunny costumes.” “Retro Eye Candy” 4 out of 5 Amazon review

“While it claims to condemn the dehumanization of the bunnies, it will also get as much mileage as possible out of scenes showing beautiful women in scanty, tight-fitting outfits.” The New York Times

Jesus Christ Superstar

Norman Jewison · 1973
108min · DCP
  • Sunday, Mar 31, 2024, 5:30pm

What’s the buzz?

Adapted from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Broadway rock opera, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR recounts the last days of Jesus Christ (Ted Neeley) from the perspective of Judas Iscariot (Carl Anderson), his betrayer. As Jesus's following increases, Judas begins to worry that Jesus is falling for his own hype, forgetting the principles of his teachings and growing too close to the prostitute Mary Magdalene (Yvonne Elliman). After Jesus has an outburst in a temple, Judas turns on him.

Please note: This one-off screening is exempt from our masked matinee policy. Though still encouraged, masks are not required for this showing.

“A bright and sometimes breathtaking retelling of the rock opera of the same name… Jewison, a director of large talent, has taken a piece of commercial shlock and turned it into a Biblical movie with dignity. Individual moments have such beauty and grace that you’re afraid to think of the pains that must have been necessary to get them.” Roger Ebert

Shot on Kodak 16mm film, this neo-fairytale set in Wyoming, USA follows three mischievous children as they embark on an odyssey when their mother asks them to run an errand. On the hunt to obtain her favourite blueberry pie, the children are kidnapped by poachers, battle a witch, outwit a huntsman, befriend a fairy, and bond together to become best friends forever.

*Projected in 35mm April 5-7. All other showings projected digitally.*

“I’ve never seen a film exactly like Weston Razooli’s Riddle of Fire… There are witches, freak folk twins, a hazy color palette that lends everything a lysergic glow–[Razooli] shot the film on 16mm as in the fantastical days of yore–and the kind of Celtic-style lettering for the credits and inter-titles that adds vintage flare to a film otherwise set in the present.” Kathy Fennessy, Seattle Film Blog

“Taking cues from the likes of The Goonies and Stand By Me, with a healthy dose of tabletop game Dungeons and Dragons thrown in for good measure, Weston Razooli’s feature debut celebrates the imagination and possibility that exists in childhood, when something as simple as running an errand for a parent is elevated to mythical quest status… this simple but sweet fairytale is an exuberant adventure with charm to spare.” Hannah Strong, Little White Lies

Francomania: The House of Lost Women

Jesús Franco · 1983
90min · DCP
  • Wednesday, Apr 10, 2024, 7:30pm

In 1982 – a year in which he reportedly shot 13 films – writer/director Jess Franco created THE HOUSE OF LOST WOMEN, a blithely twisted drama that is equal parts Buñuelian black comedy, over-the-top soap opera, and furiously perverse sex shocker. Starring the director’s muse Lina Romay as a pensive young nymphomaniac whose life on a remote island with her father, stepmother, and mentally-challenged sister seethes with violence, incest and some of the most degenerate scenarios of the entire Franco canon. In what could pass as an early film from Pedro Almodóvar (an admitted fan of this film and its director), Jess Franco makes one of the most fiercely angry and shockingly hilarious films of his career, one that extends forth to the work of filmmakers like John Waters and Todd Solondz, while simultaneously being one of the most handsomely mounted productions in his canon.

In Spanish with English subtitles. Scanned uncut from the original negative. Part of Francomania, a never-ending tour celebrating writer/director Jess Franco, presented by Severin Films and Chicago’s Oscarbate Film Collective.

Get there early! Severin Films will have a pop-up shop in the lobby before the screening, starting at 6:30pm.

Francomania: Sinfonia Erotica

Jesús Franco · 1980
80min · DCP
  • Thursday, Apr 11, 2024, 7:30pm

At the close of the ‘70s, eminent auteur Jess Franco revisited the works of the Marquis de Sade to create what EuroSleaze historians have called one of the most sexually daring and boldly creative films of his entire career, SINFONÍA ERÓTICA (EROTIC SYMPHONY). When an unstable noblewoman (a fearless performance by Lina Romay) returns to her lavish estate, she will find herself – along with her libertine husband, his male lover, and a young nun with a craving for violation – trapped in a web of unholy hungers and decadent perversions. Susan Hemingway co-stars in this sonata of artsy depravity, featuring a darkly psychedelic score by Franco & Franz Liszt. Reality and fantasy will blur within the confines of this zany haunted house, one that will at times leave the viewer, along with the characters, unsure of what they are witnessing.

In Spanish with English subtitles. Transferred in 4k from an uncut 35mm print donated by The Instituto de la Sexualidad Humana in Madrid. Part of Francomania, a never-ending tour celebrating writer/director Jess Franco, presented by Severin Films and Chicago’s Oscarbate Film Collective.

Get there early! Severin Films will have a pop-up shop in the lobby before the screening, starting at 6:30pm.

SECS Fest Presents: California Creamin’ – A 16mm Grindhouse Event

1970s
90min
  • Friday, Apr 19, 2024, 9:30pm

California has long been at the center of the entertainment industry, as it also was for the adult film business during the grindhouse era. For CALIFORNIA CREAMIN', the Seattle Erotica Cinema Society has assembled a program of long-lost, West Coast sex cinema on 16mm. Step into the experience of attending a storefront porn theater during the rise and fall of the adult cinema's Golden Age!

The program will open with a selection of short "beaver" films, set to a psychedelic soundtrack.

The feature is a rarely-seen Golden Age film from 1978--and even more rare as an early example of a hardcore film written and directed by an adult film actress. In this low-budget sex thriller, Sugar is hired to track down a man, played by the hunky Mike Ranger (INSATIABLE, TABOO). But when she finds him, she must decide if her loyalties fall with the criminals that hired her or with a man for whom she has found affection. [Content notice: This feature contains a fictional rape scene.]

This program will be introduced by film and media scholar, David Church, Ph.D., providing historical background on the West Coast adult film scene and 16mm storefront theaters.

PLEASE NOTE: This event is mask mandatory. Please bring a mask. There will also be masks available at the door.

*No one under 18 admitted*
